Geriatric Psychiatry is a specialized unit that focuses on the older population. The unit is designed to evaluate and treat psychiatric patients with and without concurrent medical issues.

Program Goals

The goal of the unit Geriatric Psychiatry Unit is to return an individual to an optimal level of functioning in a timely manner with a plan of continued care after discharge.

Scope of Treatment

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Heywood Hospital admits patients 24 hours a day. The program provides short term, individualized treatment by a team of professionals including psychiatrists, internists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, mental health therapists, nutritionist, occupational therapists and physical therapists. After a complete evaluation, a treatment plan will be developed and may include the following components.

Treatment Plan Components

  • Medical evaluation and management
  • Psychological and neuropsychological testing
  • Occupational and physical therapy
  • Individual, family and group therapy
  • Development of individualized behavior treatment plans
  • Aftercare planning
