Heywood Hospital provides surgical services to residents from over 150 communities and averages 7,000 procedures annually. Planned improvements to the Surgical Areas will address upgrades to our current surgical area, originally built in the 1960s.

The Surgical Pavilion at Heywood will support:

  • Advanced technologies to expand our    surgical offerings for our community
  • Provider recruitment and retention
  • Improve operating efficiencies, help to expand breadth and depth of services
  • Strengthen the financial performance and sustainability of Heywood Hospital

Improvements to the Heywood Hospital surgical facilities are long overdue. Capital improvements will address upgrades needed to our surgical suite, originally built in the 1960’s.

Our premier Surgical Pavilion will be approximately 22,000 square feet and will include six Operating Rooms, two Minor Procedure Rooms, two Endoscopy Rooms, a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Patient Preparation/Recovery Area and staff support space.

Heywood Hospital's surgical services are one of the most critical areas of the hospital. Improvements will assist to recruit quality surgeons to the region, provide a state-of-the-art experience to patients, improve efficiencies, and maintain and perhaps increase its level of profitability.

While Heywood Hospital provides surgical services to residents from over 150 Massachusetts communities, averaging approximately 7,000 procedures annually, the highest utilization rates are from within Heywood Healthcare’s primary service area. The highest utilization is by residents of Gardner, followed by Athol, then Winchendon, with an average of 900 surgeries performed annually.

Adequate surgical facilities will improve efficiencies, support physician recruitment and retention, and most importantly provide advanced technologies to our communities. The new Surgical Pavilion supports Heywood’s mission and strategy, assists Heywood Hospital to grow our market share, significantly enhances the patient and provider experience and increases revenue to ensure Heywood remains an independent, community owned hospital for years to come.
