What is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech & language pathology is the science devoted to the prevention, identification, evaluation, and habilitation/rehabilitation of a variety of communication and swallowing disorders. These may include difficulties with articulation (speech sound production), language processing and/or comprehension, expression of spoken or written language, fluency, voice, swallowing and oral motor function.

Who Provides These Services?

Our staff consists entirely of knowledgeable, experienced speech-language pathologists who are certified by the American Speech & Hearing Association, and licensed to practice in the state of Massachusetts.

Speech-language pathologists, also called SLPs, are experts in communication. SLPs work with people of all ages, from babies to adults, to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders.

What Pediatric Services are Available?

Screening and diagnostic assessment for children of all ages with communication disorders secondary to:

• Auditory Processing disorder
• Autism Spectrum Disorder
• Cerebral Palsy/Neurological disorders
• Cleft Palate/Congenital anomalies
• Developmental delays
• Down Syndrome or other genetic disorders
• Hearing loss/Recurrent Otitis Media
• Speech/Language delay
• Voice or Fluency disorder

Individualized therapeutic intervention for the following delays or disorders:

• Articulation disorder/Oral motor dysfunction
• Fluency or Voice Disorder
• Receptive or expressive language delay or disorder

What Adult Services are Available?

Diagnostic assessment, including videofluoroscopic swallow studies (Modified Barium Swallow studies/MBS studies), and individualized therapeutic intervention for communication, cognitive or swallowing disorders (dysphagia) secondary to any of the following:

• Alzheimer's Disease
• CVA (Stroke)
• Hearing Loss
• Parkinson's Disease
• Traumatic Brain Injury
• Voice Pathology/voice disorder
• Other Neurological disorders (MS, ALS, etc.)

How are These Treated?

After completing a thorough evaluation, a comprehensive therapy program is developed.  All therapy is designed to meet the needs of the individual, taking into consideration the patient’s age, preferences, and activities of daily life.
