GARDNER, MA — Participants enjoyed a beautiful fall day at the 29th annual Heywood Hospital Golf Classic, the “Watkins-Faust Open”, held on September 27th, at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg. Hosted as a fully outdoor event, 146 participants, sponsors and committee members enjoyed the day and helped to raise funds in support of the new Heywood Hospital Surgical Pavilion, planned to break ground in the new year.
Chair of the Golf Committee, Patrick Griffin kicked off the day welcoming friends of Heywood back to the “in person” event. The day began with a beautiful lunch sponsored by Barton Associates, Dr. Dan Asquino, President Emeritus, MWCC Colliers Project Leaders, Mount Wachusett Community College and SMRT Architects and Engineers. Fitchburg High School Senior, Janiel Oquendo sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem that was followed by Oak Hill’s PGA Head Golf Pro, Bucky Buchanan welcoming the golfers, and reviewing the rules of play.
Win Brown, President and CEO of Heywood Healthcare, announced the event proceeds of $175,000 will contribute to the $37 million surgical pavilion project, designed to advance and expand access to surgical care for residents of North Central Massachusetts.
Celeste Drake, Sue Tourigny, Laura Foresman and Joan Wotton, were the Ladies Scramble winning team, with a score of 76. Kevin Mack, Ken Arsenault, Jimmy Gallant and Pete Trudel took the Men’s Scramble with a score of 60. With a score of 65, the winning Mixed Group team included Samantha Shalom, Paul Natalitzio, John Downs and Eric Shell.
The winning team for “Best Ball Men”went to Doug Starrett, Joel Shaughnessy, Cory Goodnow and Mark Sprague, scoring 55. The “Best Ball Mixed Foursome” of Steve Roach, Cathy Rossi, William Corbett and Steven McCue, scored a 57.
Closest to the pin awards were picked off by Cathy Rossi and Win Brown at the fifth hole, Elaine Fluet and Mike Stromski at the 13th hole, and Cathy Rossi and Dave Larrivee at the 17th hole.
