Accreditations and Recognition

The Joint Commission

Heywood Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) and has received their gold seal of approval. In addition, our behavioral health services are accredited under The Joint Commission's Behavioral Health Program, and our Laboratory Services are accredited under The Joint Commission's Laboratory Accreditation Program. TJC conducts rigorous surveys to ensure that hospitals nationwide are adhering to the strict standards of care mandated by the state and federal governments. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. The accreditation process, both the preparation and the actual inspection, helps hospitals improve their performance. Surveys take place every three years and are unannounced. Heywood Hospital’s last survey took place in fall 2019.

The Leapfrog Group

New Hospital Safety Scores were recently announced by The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. Heywood Hospital was one of 798 hospitals to receive an A, ranking us among the safest hospitals in the United States. Heywood Hospital fully meets Leapfrog's expectations for Steps to Avoid Harm, Never Event Management, Appropriate Use of Antibiotics in Hospitals, Medication Reconciliation, Bariatric Surgery for Weight Loss, and Maternity Care.

"We are thrilled to receive an 'A' again from Leapfrog, which demonstrates Heywood's ongoing commitment to quality care and patient service," stated Heywood Hospital President & CEO Win Brown.

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Improving Surgical Care and Recovery Program

We participate in the Improving Surgical Care and Recovery (ISCR) Program. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Safety Program for Improving Surgical Care and Recovery (ISCR), is a collaborative program being conducted by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and Johns Hopkins Medicine Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. This program seeks to meaningfully improve clinical outcomes by supporting hospitals in the implementation of evidence-based enhanced recovery pathways as part of a national perioperative collaborative. As a participating hospital, we have access to U.S. leaders in perioperative quality, evidence-based clinical pathways ready for local adaptation, tools and materials to help facilitate development and implementation of clinical pathways. There are monthly coaching calls and in-person training to collaborate and support hospital work in quality improvement. Participating hospitals also collect and submit performance data to create a national benchmarking database to further spur improvement efforts.
