Heywood Health Beat
To address the growing need for behavioral healthcare, Heywood Healthcare has developed a premier destination for treatment of mental health and substance misuse through its campus in Petersham. The mission of the Quabbin Retreat is to be the trusted choice for high quality, accessible care.
In partnership with local stakeholders and leading providers, Heywood Healthcare is establishing a full continuum of programs to expand access to adult and adolescent services and elevate the quality and caliber of care.
Each program will address core mental health and substance misuse needs, be financially accessible to patients and provide comprehensive coordinated care.
Behavioral health is the most pervasive health issue facing communities in Massachusetts, especially in the North Central and Western regions. These regions have the highest rates of adult male suicide in New England, an adolescent suicide rate that is five times the state average and rapidly increasing substance misuse rates and death due to opiate use. Additionally, some of the highest reported child mal-treatment rates in the state are found, with Gardner as the 9th, Fitchburg the 12th, and Athol as the 2nd highest rate.
Despite these statistics and the number of patients who need care, Heywood Hospital remains the only provider of non-profit inpatient mental health services in North Central Massachusetts.
Today there are limited psychiatric resources resulting in long waits for treatment and counseling and limited options for residential substance abuse services and inpatient beds.
The Quabbin Retreat addresses fragmented care issues by coordinating primary care across behavioral health services and increasing relevant programs for all generations.
The property comprises 82 acres of wooded and developed areas. Portions of the buildings date to the 1920s, and later additions bring the building to 75,816 square feet on several floors. The main building has 86 bedrooms, a commercial kitchen, meeting areas and several outbuildings and gardens. The facility has a private well and septic system.
The Quabbin Retreat has been designed to be a premier regional destination for behavioral health treatment driven by the wide-spread needs of the community and further substantiated by our regional substance abuse and suicide data.
"Providing local, financially accessible behavioral health and substance misuse treatment services are the most critical facets of
transforming behavioral healthcare in our region. The Quabbin Retreat fills an indisputable void in Central Massachusetts."
