Speech-Language Pathology Services at
Heywood Rehabilitation Center
What is Speech-Language Pathology?
Speech & Language Pathology is the science devoted to the prevention, identification, evaluation, and habilitation/rehabilitation of a variety of communication and swallowing disorders. These may include difficulties with articulation (speech sound production), language processing and/or comprehension, expression of spoken or written language, fluency, voice, swallowing and oral motor control.
What Pediatric services are available?
- Screening and diagnostic assessment for children of all ages with communication disorders secondary to:
Speech/Language delay
Hearing loss/Recurrent Otitis Media
Pervasive Developmental Disorder/ Autism Spectrum Disorder
Developmental delays
Cleft Palate/Congenital anomalies
Cerebral Palsy/Neurological disorders
Voice or Fluency disorder
Auditory Processing disorder
Down Syndrome or other genetic disorders
- Individualized therapeutic intervention for the following delays or disorders:
Receptive or expressive language delay or disorder
Articulation disorder/Oral motor dysfunction
Fluency or Voice disorder
What Adult services are available?
Diagnostic assessment, including videofluoroscopic swallow studies (Modified Barium Swallow studies/MBS studies), and individualized therapeutic intervention for communication or swallowing disorders (Dysphagia) secondary to any of the following:
CVA (Stroke)
Traumatic Brain Injury
Parkinson’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease
Vocal pathology/Voice disorder
Hearing Loss
Other Neurological disorder (Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, etc.)
How are these treated?
After completing a thorough evaluation, a comprehensive therapy program is developed. All therapy is designed to meet the needs of the individual, taking into consideration the patient’s age, preferences, and activities of daily life.

Our staff consists entirely of experienced Speech-Language Pathologists who are certified by the American Speech & Hearing Association, and licensed to practice in the state of Massachusetts.

What is Audiology?
Audiology is the prevention, identification, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of a variety of hearing impairments and auditory processing disorders.
What are Hearing Impairments & Processing Disorders?
Hearing Impairments are difficulties hearing sounds and/or understanding speech. There are different types of hearing disorders, depending on where along the auditory track the disruption occurs. Auditory Processing disorders are difficulties in the ability to attend to, discriminate, recognize, or comprehend auditory information. Hearing impairments and Auditory Processing disorders may be caused by chronic ear infections, heredity, birth trauma, ototoxic drugs, head injury, viral or bacterial infection, noise exposure, aging, neurological impairment, and tumors.
