Occupational Therapy



Hand Therapy Program 

The Hand Therapy Program at Heywood Rehab can treat disorders of the hand due to: fractures, post-surgical procedures, tendonitis, arthritis, amputations, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, burns and wounds. Some of these treatment procedures include splinting, range of motion strengthening, scar management, wound care, ElectricalModalities, joint protection and patient education.

Falls Prevention Program

The Falls Prevention Program is designed to assist in the treatment of Gait and balance disorders. Some of these treatments can include balance activities, Gait training/mobility devices, home exercise programs, home safety assessments and community mobility training. 

Low Vision Program

Our Low Vision Program assists patients diagnosed with Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and CVA (Stroke). We can assist patients with magnification systems, lighting systems, adaptive equipment and training in daily activities such as reading, writing, financial management, household chores and community activities. 

Neurological Rehabilitation Program

Heywood Rehab's Neurological Rehab Program is designed for individuals diagnosed with illnesses and injuries like CVA (Stroke), Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Traumatic Brain Injury. Our treatments include movement re-education, splinting, cognitive training, functional mobility training, self-care training and daily household chores.  

Pediatric Occupational Therapy Program

The Pediatric OT Program pairs our experienced and caring staff with children ages 3 and older to work on skill building in areas like handwriting, gross and fine motor skills, visual perceptual skills and other activities that are part of daily life. These services can be offered in conjunction with therapies through the child's school or on their own. 


Physical Therapy



Orthopaedic Injuries

Heywood Rehab has trained staff and equipment to treat injuries such as fractures, sprains/strains, bursitis, tendonitis, fascitis, sport or work related injuries, total joint replacement and Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction. We also treat and rehabiltate patients pre and post most surgical procedures. 

Neurological Disorders

We see patients with lasting effects from illnesses such as CVA (Stroke), Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Bell’s Palsy, Vertigo, vestibular (balance) dysfuntions and traumatic brain injuries. Working with Rehab staff, many patients are able to regain strength and movement to complete normal daily tasks. 

Back and Neck Pain

Heywood Rehab can treat a variety of conditions that cause back and neck pain including postural dysfunctions, radiating pain to limbs, disc disorders, chronic pain, musculoskeletal strains, headaches, Torticollis, Sacrolliac Dysfuntion, Thoracic Outlet Sydrom. We also see many patient pre/post surgical procedures. Treatments offered for back and neck pain include therapeutic exercises, Gait and balance training, Ultrasound, electrical stimulation including muscular stimulation and TENS Units and manual techniques such as Myofascial Release and joint mobilizations. We also use mechanical and manual tracyion, postural and body mechanics training and other sport rehabilitation procedures. 

Heywood Rehab also offers Wheelchair/Scooter Evaluations and recommendations for custom fit equipment. 
 

Speech-Language Pathology Services at Heywood Rehabilitation Center

What is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech & Language Pathology is the science devoted to the prevention, identification, evaluation, and habilitation/rehabilitation of a variety of communication and swallowing disorders. These may include difficulties with articulation (speech sound production), language processing and/or comprehension, expression of spoken or written language, fluency, voice, swallowing and oral motor control.

What Pediatric services are available?

Heywood Rehab offers screening and diagnostic assessment for children of all ages with communication disorders secondary to speech/language delay and hearing loss/recurrent Otitis Media. We also see patients with pervasive developmental disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders and various developmental delays. Other conditions treated include Cleft Palate/congenital anomalies, Cerebral Palsy/neurological disorders, voice/fluency disorders, Auditory Processing disorder, Down Syndrome and other genetic disorders.

We also offer individualized therapeutic intervention for children affected by delays or disorders including receptive or expressive language delay/disorder, articulation disorder/oral motor dysfunction, fluency and/or voice disorders. 

What Adult services are available?

For our adult patients, we offer diagnostic assessment, including videofluoroscopic swallow studies (Modified Barium Swallow studies/MBS studies) and individualized therapeutic intervention for communication or swallowing disorders (Dysphagia) secondary to anyone diagnosed with CVA (Stroke), traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, vocal pathology/voice disorder, hearing loss and other neurological disorders (Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, etc.).

How are these treated?

After completing a thorough evaluation, a comprehensive therapy program is developed. All therapy is designed to meet the needs of the individual, taking into consideration the patient’s age, preferences, and activities of daily life.

Our staff consists entirely of experienced Speech-Language Pathologists who are certified by the American Speech & Hearing Association, and licensed to practice in the state of Massachusetts.

Audiology Services at Heywood Rehabilitation Center

What is Audiology?

Audiology is the prevention, identification, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of a variety of hearing impairments and auditory processing disorders. 

What are Hearing Impairments & Processing Disorders?

Hearing Impairments are difficulties hearing sounds and/or understanding speech.  There are different types of hearing disorders, depending on where along the auditory track the disruption occurs. Auditory Processing disorders are difficulties in the ability to attend to, discriminate, recognize, or comprehend auditory information. Hearing impairments and Auditory Processing disorders may be caused by chronic ear infections, heredity, birth trauma, ototoxic drugs, head injury, viral or bacterial infection, noise exposure, aging, neurological impairment, and tumors.

What Audiological services are available?

Some of our audiological services include hearing aid evaluations and dispensing, including a variety of hearing aid options and manufacturers, state-of-the-art hearing aids and free hearing aid consultations. We offer many affordable options as well as hearing aid service and repair. Additionally, we have earmold and swim mold fabrication, hearing aid orientation and a 30 day trial period on all hearing aid devices. 

Patients also have access to screening and diagnostic audiological (hearing) evaluations (newborn to adult), central auditory processing evaluations and occupational health hearing screenings, diagnostic audiometry, including speech and pure tone testing and tympanometry, pediatric assessment including visual reinforcement and conditioned play audiometry and patient counseling and education relative to amplification and hearing conservation. .
