Geriatric Behavorial Services

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Heywood Hospital offers specialized medical and psychiatric care for adults who are experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties. The program is designed for adults age 50 and over but may also be appropriate for younger adults who suffer from psychiatric or a combination of psychiatric and medical disorders.

Program Goals

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program is based upon a medical model of treatment. By integrating psychiatric and medical treatment, the program provides a comprehensive approach to caring for each patient. The primary goals are to differentiate the factors necessitating the hospitalization, to optimize functioning and decrease social isolation.

Scope of Treatment

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Heywood Hospital admits patients 24 hours a day. The program provides short term, individualized treatment by a team of professionals including psychiatrists, internists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, mental health therapists, nutritionist, occupational therapists and physical therapists. After a complete evaluation, a treatment plan will be developed and may include the following components.

  • Psychological and neuropsychologial testing
  • Occupational and physical therapy
  • Individual, family and group therapy
  • Development of individualized behavior treatment plans
  • Aftercare planning
