WHAT IS SBIRT?

SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment. Patients are routinely screened in the Emergency Room, with the goal of identifying those who may be at risk for alcohol and/or substance abuse. The SBIRT approach is patient-centered and non-judgmental, resulting in a positive encounter driven by the patients needs. For those who request assistance, treatment options are discussed and placement is facilitated.

The SBIRT program was pioneered at Boston Medical Center as an effective intervention performed in the Emergency Department with the goal of promoting healthy behaviors in the area of alcohol and drug abuse and dependency. This is achieved through the use of compassion, skilled listening and the patient’s own desire to change. Outreach and community education are an important part of the SBIRT mission, empowering area residents to make healthy and informed decisions with regards to alcohol and drug use.

WHO WE SERVE?

The Heywood Hospital SBIRT office serves the greater Gardner area. The office is conveniently located in the Emergency Department with the goal of being accessible to all who seek services. Each individual is treated respectfully and confidentiality is assured at all times. Family members with questions about substance abuse are encouraged to seek information. Assistance is also offered on a drop-in basis.

WHAT SERVICES ARE PROVIDED?

For patients who are interested in changing their alcohol and/or drug use, options for change are offered with the goal of matching each patient with the type of services they desire – inpatient detoxification, rehabilitation, outpatient programs, AA or NA meetings, etc. Assistance is provided with coordination of services and we encourage patients to stay in contact with us. Situations change over time, and when you are ready for help, the help is available. Plans are underway for a support group for former patients.

DOES HEYWOOD PROVIDE DETOX?

Heywood Hospital is not a detox facility, although we do offer a Dual Diagnosis program through the Mental Health Department. The SBIRT office has developed relationships with many facilities throughout New England and can coordinate admission for treatment, including any pretesting and evaluations that may be required by your Insurance company.
