Call us for more information about our Mental Health Unit.

The Heywood Hospital Mental Health Unit offers a treatment program for patients to stabilize and begin developing necessary coping skills in a supportive and safe environment.  The Adult Inpatient unit at Heywood Hospital services patients 18 years of age and older.

The Heywood Hospital Mental Health Unit treatment team consists of a Psychiatric provider, nurses, therapists/counselors, social workers, case managers and trained support staff who make the difference to ensure quality care is provided in a nurturing environment.

Features of our care include:

  • Person Centered Care - Focusing on the needs of the individual to provide care respectful and responsive to individual needs.
  • Continuum of Care - recognizing for patients to be successful after discharge there must be collaboration to tie care together providing a seamless transition back into the community.
  • Group Sessions - Will be offered throughout the day and presented by disciplines from Behavioral Health Therapy, Behavioral Health Nursing and Occupational Therapists.
  • Medication Management - the psychiatric provider will meet individually with patients to assess needs, implement medication changes as needed and monitor for therapeutic benefits.
  • Sensory Modulation Therapy - the use of sensory tools to support patients to use their senses to learn self-soothing techniques to modify their current emotional and behavioral responses in stressful situations.

The Mental Health Unit Sensory Room offers a serene mural, chalkboard wall, and comfortable rocking chairs. A sensory cart is available containing items that address all sensory systems while assisting with distraction and coping techniques.  Patients will be offered an opportunity to develop a sensory diet with trained staff.  The sensory diet will provide an opportunity for staff to offer individualized interventions to assist patients who are struggling.

The sensory approach offers patients humane and self-soothing options in prevention and deescalation. Also, many government regulatory agencies strongly endorse the sensory approach as it provides the ability to decrease/prevent use of restraints and offers patients a safe way to manage emotions.

The Mental Health Unit has added and updated safety features including:

  • The Alertus System:  A one touch activation system that swiftly alerts staff that assistance is required.
  • Surveillance Cameras:  Allow staff the ability to monitor the unit for safety. These features assist the staff to foster an environment of safety and provide reassurance to patients.

In addition, we offer outpatient programsthat assists with supporting patients as they are discharged or as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization.
