WHAT MAKES PEOPLE OVERWEIGHT?
There are many factors why people gain weight but mainly if the number of calories you eat is more than the number of calories your body needs to use, you gain weight. Combine this with the lack of physical exercise and you also gain weight. There are other factors which play a part in weight gain and they are as follows:
- Habits: Eating too many calories can become a habit. Activities like watching TV instead of being physically active, or "super sizing" can lead to weight gain.
- Genes: Overweight and obesity does tend to run in families and genes may give you a predisposing factor for overweight.
- Illness: Some diseases can lead to weight gain. These include hypothyroidism, Cushing syndrome and depression. Talk with your physician if you think you have a health problem.
- Medicine: Some medicines can lead to weight gain. Again, speak with your physician about side effects of medicine you are taking.
- Environment: Food messages are everywhere. At home, at school at work, shopping centers, on TV and social events. People tend to eat too much because food is always there. Our world is filled with remote controlled TVs, drive-in banks, escalators, on-line messaging, which makes it all the easier to become physically inactive.
- Emotional feelings: Many people eat when they are bored, sad, angry, stressed and even when their not hungry.
You may not be able to change or control all the factors that lead to overweight BUT you can change your eating and exercise habits.
