Childbirth and Parenting Classes 

When it comes to having a baby, you can count on Heywood Hospital for complete support.  We offer a variety of classes and services to help you through your pregnancy and prepare you for parenthood.  We recommend that you register for classes by the fifth month of your pregnancy.  Once registered, you will receive a letter approximately 6-8 weeks before your due date informing you of the exact date, time and location of the class.

AED Overview and How to save someone who is choking .

2014 Classes will be held Saturdays on the following dates:  Jan. 11, Feb. 8 (CPR only), March 15, April 12 (CPR only), May 17, June 14 (CPR only), Sept. 20, Oct. 11 (CPR only), Nov. 15 & Dec. 13 (CPR only). No classes July & Aug.

For those with previous childbirth experience, this one-evening class reviews breathing and relaxation techniques as well as signs of labor. Other topics include sibling preparation.

Class content includes the same information as the full 4-week series class, however, it is condensed into a one time class held on the second Saturday of every other month.

Childbirth Education - 4 Series Class

Taught by certified childbirth educators, this is designed for parents having their first baby and covers information on breathing and relaxation techniques, how to recognize and cope with each stage of labor as well as various options for pain relief.
6:00pm – 9:00pm. First 4 weeks of every other month on Tuesdays (Feb., April, June, Aug., Oct., Dec.).
Fee: $50 delivering at Heywood, $80 delivering elsewhere.

Early Pregnancy Class

Teaches what to expect throughout the course of your pregnancy and what you can do to manage any discomforts that you may have.

Infant/Child Safety and CPR - Evening Class

Before your baby arrives, include in your safety planning our Infant/Child Safety and CPR class. Recommended for parents, grandparents and anyone caring for an infant or toddler, this program teaches you how to prevent injuries, basic safety, and the proper procedure for assisting an infant or child who is choking or unconscious.
5:30pm – 8:30pm. First Wednesday of every other month (Feb., April, June, Aug., Oct., Dec.) Fee: $40 per couple, $30 per person.

Meet the Doula

Heywood Hospital offers a volunteer Doula program to enhance the comfort of our patients by providing continuous uninterrupted care for the laboring woman and her family. The “Meet the Doula” night is a great opportunity to meet some of our Doulas and learn about the benefits of a Doula which can include a shorter labor, reduced need for pain medication and a decrease in C-section rates. This is a free service available to all patients that deliver at Heywood Hospital.
One evening, 6:00pm – 7:30 pm. Fourth Monday of every other month. Free.

Mother & Baby Class

Teaches new mothers what to expect during the first three months after your baby is born. Includes information on the post partum period as well as newborn care.
One evening, 6:00pm – 8:30 pm. First Thursday of every other month. (Jan., March, May, July, September, November).
Fee: $20 delivering at Heywood, $30 delivering elsewhere.

Prenatal Breastfeeding Class

This class will provide you with the information and techniques to ensure a successful and rewarding breastfeeding experience. Topics include health benefits of breastfeeding for you and your baby, positioning, how to know if your baby is getting enough milk, expression and storage of milk, and how to continue breastfeeding if you plan to return to work.
One evening, 6:00pm – 8:30 pm. Second Monday of every other month (Jan., March, May, July, Sept., Nov.).
Fee: $20 delivering at Heywood, $30 delivering elsewhere.

Sibling Class

This class is intended to prepare children for the arrival of a new brother or sister.  How babies are fed, diapered and cared for are some of the topics that are covered.  Children are shown a brief movie and given a tour of the maternity unit so they can see where mom and the new baby will be once it is born. The class even comes complete with coloring book, crayons and cookies.

1:00pm – 2:30pm.  Third Sunday of every other month (Jan., March 25th, May, July, Sept., Nov.)  Fee: $15.

Teen Childbirth Education Class

Class content is similar to the 4-week series class, but is offered in a condensed format (3 week series) specific to the needs of teens and young adults.
4:30pm – 7:30pm. First Monday of every other month (Feb., April, June, Aug., Oct., Dec.).

Health & Wellness Classes

Pilates 

 

Pilates is a body conditioning routine that seeks to build flexibility, strength, endurance and coordination without adding muscle bulk.  In addition, Pilates increases circulation and helps to sculpt the body and strengthen the body’s “core” or “powerhouse” (torso).  Pilates improves your mental and physical well-being, increases flexibility, and strengthens muscles. Please wear comfortable clothing, bring a mat, water and a towel.  These classes are for all levels of fitness. 
 
6-week session -Tuesdays - 5:30p-6:30pm  6-week sessions – Tuesdays, 5:30 - 6:30pm
October 29th – December 3rd
March 4th -  April 8th
April 15th – May 20th

Tai Chi Chi Kung 

This nine-week program introduces the art of nurturing the flow of life-giving, healing chi energy throughout the body using a series of carefully designed Chi Kung movements known as The Brocade of Eight. Because these gentle, easy-to-learn exercises involve body, mind and spirit, Chi Kung is remarkably effective in improving general health.  Please wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water.   


9-week session – Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:30pm – March 19th (introductory class)
March 19th – May 14    Fee:  $80/9 week session – First 1 hour introductory class free.

Gentle Yoga 

This six-week program is designed to “de-stress”and release tension with gentle yoga moves.  This program is designed for all fitness levels. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat and water.

Pump It Up Pilates

Come sculpt and chisel your way to a new body in the New Year.  This class includes light wights, cardio and Pilates. Pump-it-up Pilates is a Pilates based class, which incorporates some great core challenging cardio and weight moves.  This class is  designed for all levels of fitness.  Please bring your own hand weights(1-5lbs), a mat and a bottle of water.

Zumba Fitness

Are you ready to party yourself into shape?  Forget the workout, just lose yourself in the music and find yourself in shape at the original dance-fitness party.  Zumba® classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats.  Before you know it, you’ll be getting fit and your energy levels will be soaring!  It’s easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating.

Zentangle

Zantagle® is an easy to learn, relaxing method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns while: increasing focus and creativity, reducing stress, providing artistic satisfaction, and an increasing sense of personal well-being.  Zentangle® can be enjoyed by a wide range of skill and ages. Creating a Zentagle is an easy to understand process of simple deliberate strokes which build on each other in beautiful, mesmerizing and surprising ways.  During class you will learn the steps to create several Zentangle patterns and how to begin to see shapes in the world around you to begin to create your own patterns.

Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:30pm
November 13th, January 15th, March 12th
Fee:  $30 per class(includes supplies and a mini-kit).

Healthy Habits for Life

This six-week program is designed to help adults develop a healthy life long eating and activity plan.  This program covers healthy eating for a healthy weight, physical activity, basic nutrition, menu planning, shopping, eating out and much more!

6-week session, Thursdays, 6:00 – 7:00pm
September 11 -  October 16
Fee:  $10 – Covers the cost of the program booklet(for you to take home).

Guilt-Free Holiday Eating

Looking forward to the Holidays but are afraid of overindulging on those traditional high fat, high sugar foods?  Life during the Holidays can be filled with endless temptations that make healthy eating a challenge.  Learn how to:  modify recipes, use the “Eat this not that” method and use other strategies to survive the holidays.  Please join us to pave your way with survival skills for guilt free holiday eating!

Celiac Disease & Gluten Free Living

Have you been diagnosed with Celiac Disease?  Or are you among the millions with undiagnosed celiac disease or gluten intolerance?  Learn how to live the quality life you deserve by maneuvering through the myths and facts of gluten free living.  There will also be gluten free recipes available and some sample tasting of gluten free foods.
